Only suggestion I can make is that the engine was changed by a previous owner.
The early Savages had open coil springs on the front forks - I think that style changed about 1988 - what does yours have?
Is the manufacturers plate on the steering head missing - it has the serial number and date of manufacture stamped on it
Keep the rubber side down
